Ansett Offers Discount Fares

Ansett yesterday launched itself back into the discount air fare market with a range of fares to help it compete with Qantas, which last week released one million discounted seats.
The resurrected airline announced it would offer 500,000 seats at discount rates for sale as of yesterday and would also be offering restricted $77 one-way fares between Melbourne and Sydney through the Internet yesterday and today to briefly match the cheapest Qantas Internet fares.
The news comes as Ansett's administrators are attempting to negotiate hotel and air fare package deals, as well as ticket sales through travel agents, in an attempt to get more passengers in seats.
At present Ansett tickets are available only via phone or the Internet.
Ansett's discount strategy includes thousands of Melbourne-Sydney return seats at $176, which equals the instant purchase fare offered by Qantas but is $22 more than Qantas' Internet-only deal.
Ansett this week began offering ``special sales on selected routes", the details being made public only on the day of sale.
